Motoros kalandom első rész: repülés Dunedinbe / First part of my motobike journey: fly down to Dunedin

A ragasztó ragasztó része ott maradt a motoron.

A WD-40 feltalálójának kis kémiai Nobel-díjat adnék!

Mindent, amit lehetett elintéztem, vettem repjegyeket, két részletben, Jetstar vitt Wellingtontól Christchurchig ($50) (itteniek Csicsának becézik), majd Air New Zealandos „kávédaráló” Csicsából Dunedinbe ($112).

Szerencsére Csicsában elváltak útjaink, onnan Air New Zealanddal repültem és idősebb stewardessekkel.

English version:

2 May 2013 in the evening

I have just finished the washing, shirts, T-shirts, pullover, socks, underwears (no, not pants, girls wear them ~ if they wear) are started being dry. I did a handy pre-wash on all of them, especially on the collars of the shirts, followed my mother’s advise. :) I am a good boy.

While the first paragraph was with a total different subject, the second one already regards to my „new” motorbike. As on the day before yesterday it was about to rain in the evening, which -you know- is a typical weather here nowadays, actually it is winter now, I behaved like a careful owner and covered my Honda with a wide nylon which had been saved from my office. I fixed it to the windscreen plexi and to the seat with a wide „ducktape”.

Next morning I was happy to realize tape still held, moreover it was even perfect in the afternoon but when I tried it to remove I faced with the worst situation. The inner side of the tape stucked to the windscreen plexi and to the seat. How should I get rid of it? With 96% etil-alcohol or “white gas” from the pharmacy or light thinner, in Hungary it is easy to purchase any of them but here, I do not have any and it is complicated to buy. There are special laws here, for example supermarkets must not sell hard drinks just special shops only with special permission.

Back to the main stream of my story, I went to my bike, to the street (unfortunately the rental has not got garage so I have to store Honda on the street) and first I gave a chance to a strong windowcleaner to remove the glue. No success. Second try was with our world “unneglectable” magic liquid –WD-40- and what a pity, it could have cleared the windscreen with some work. But not from the seat, gosh. By the way I would give a small Nobel-prize to the developer of the WD-40.

The third volunteer was Klari’s tequila with 45% alcohol content, she provided the whole bottle for me (she was very helpful, was not she?) I was scrubbing the seat lightly with the tequila in the dark, the bottle was standing next to the motorbike when policemen stopped behind me to watch what I was doing. When he saw nothing illegal act was happening just asked a short question without tease and went forward (let me continue the hard staff). No need to say, tequila did not solve my problem (and does not solve problems of lot of others’, either), but it gave time to think.

Finally I found the solution, it was 20 cm far from the scene, the petrol tank and petrol in there. It was in front of me meanwhile, aaaah. Petrol as a totipotent material removed the rest of the Duck tape from my seat and I got back the original condition. Since that time I have bought a motor cover, I can hear in my room how strongly the wind is fluttering it. Actually it means it is still on the bike... :)

Who does not read my blog not knows what motorbike I protect from rain with cover. It is a Honda CBR750 especially for japanese market, from 1988, that I won after a hard fight in an auction at the beginning of April on a New Zealand auction web site, on trademe.co.nz. I had already known that to win the bike could have been the easiest, because the bike itself was in Dunedin, in South Island, 800 km far from Wellington, from my home.

I do not want to repeat myself, the main thing is I agreed with the seller to fly down to pick up the motor at the weekend on 27-28 April and I would come back with the bike. I organized everything I could, had bought two fly tickets, I was flying with Jetstar from Wellington to Christchurch ($50 ticket) (Christchurch in kiwi slang is “Chicha”) and flew from Christchurch to Dunedin by Air New Zealand on a “coffee mill” for $112. I had had a booked “backpacker” accomodation in Christchurch in North South Holiday Park for 27th Saturday evening ($58) and a booked ticket to the interislander ferry ($111).

Christchurch had been the second biggest city in NZ before the demolation earthquake in 2011, since then population has been bottom and the city has not recovered from that termination yet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Christchurch_earthquake

I had not slept well at the previous night of the day I started my journey, but independent from this fact, my Saturday started fine. The spectacle of Jetstar stewardesses (they all were “plus sized” ~ I prefer this appearence) made my trip to a perfect flight, but unfortunately a hissy, (demanded his mother with sharp screaming) small kiwi boy, sitting a half meter distance from me, was struggling to kill my idyll.

They did not come with me to Dunedin to my luck. From Christchurch I was flying with Air New Zealand with older stewardesses. On the Air New Zealand plane Indian(?) boys annoyed me with their behaviour, splintered those plastic drams they had got from the stewardess and stuffed the junks to the pocket of the seats while their mother was watching them with smile. Is this normal? I was cleared about that in Indian families boy children are in a special, privileged condition...Finally the mother collected and cleared all mess made by her boys, so I was satisfied with the happy end, meanwhile we arrived at Dunedin where Norman, the seller of the motorbike was waiting for me.

Motort keresek II. / Seeking a motorbike II.

Jelentem, nagy küzdelemben megnyertem a motorkerékpár aukciót, kaptam lehetőséget a Honda CBR750 megvételére.

Először is 800km oda és 800km vissza a távolság. Másodszor, a visszaút 800km-ét egyedül, ezen a vadidegen motoron fogom megtenni, mindenféle előzetes műszaki átvizsgálás, illetve gépismeret nélkül.

Yessssz…
Alternatív megoldást találtam, Wellingtonból Christchurchbe megyek Jetstarral 50 dollárért (nagytáska nélküli jegy, fapados), onnan pedig New Zealand Airlines-zal Dunedinbe, cirka 120 dollárért.

I
Na ilyet nem szeretnék / This is not that what I want
Picton (déli sziget) kikötője / Picton harbour on South Island

English version:

I proudly present that after a hard fight I was the highest bidder of the motorbike auction and got a chance to purchase the Honda CBR750! There was a big scramble at the end of the auction with beyond reason bidding strategy and the whole stuff had strong smell of the lamp. The other bidder (my opponent) increased his bid limit by 10 NZD, this would have not been a problem but every new bid in the last two minutes extended the auction by another two minutes. He always insisted on waiting till the final thirty second of the two minutes expansion and made another 10 NZD bid. I really did not get him and his amazing strategy, it would have been much easier if he made a bid with his maximum budget in once and we did not spend the sack time with playing…

While I was bidding I already knew to win the auction would be the less complicated part of this adventure. By bidding on online auctions we can purchase such properties easily what are far far away from our home. The way to deliver these takings is getting exponential harder and more complexed by the growth in the size above a small package category. A 750 cc. motorbike is not an envelope size gadget actually.

I try to describe and make clear why I call „adventure” this simple „personal pick up” :
First of all, distance from Wellington to Dunedin is 800km and road back is another 800km from Dunedin to Wellington. Secondly I have to ride - during the whole 800km back trip – on a totally unknown bike without any previous personal experience with it or specified technical knowledge about it.
I just dare to whisper, though I have international motor driving licence and after 15 year motorbike rider experience gathered on the European right-hand roads, I even have not driven any meter in „keep-left traffic”!
I have never been to the South-Island before, actually I am not familiar with North-Island too except the city in Wellington.
What a pity, during the first half year at work I can not get any vacation, so I have to accomplish the full 1600km journey within a simple weekend, on Monday I have to start working again.
Well, after these points is there anybody who still thinks that this will be a simple personal pick up? :)

Baltazaar would rather dies than gives it up… so I started the organization. I had already bought a helmet (Caberg Konda flip-up), bought a warm, winter gloves with 3M waterproof layer, contacted with the seller of the bike. Next week I am about to make my international driving license be translated to a certified English and look for flight ticket to Dunedin. I have never been pet by the fate, so it is normal when I see weekend flight tickets for around 230NZD, and ones for 55NZD to other days… Yesss.
I chose an alternate solution, I will fly with Jetstar (grab a seat ticket, economy) from Wellington to Christchurch (50NZD) and from Christchurch to Dunedin with air New Zealand (120NZD). I save 60 NZD, it is more than nothing!!!

In my draft plan my airplane takes off on 27th Saturday morning from Wellington, lands one hour later in Christchurch, one hour for transfer and starts flying towards Dunedin, arrival is at 11:35 am. Seller picks me up at the airport, handover, and around 12:30 I start my way going home. On the half back trip, in Christchurch, I stop to have a break and sleep, on Sunday I reach Picton harbour on South-Island and get on the Interislander ferry. Ferry carries me to Wellington harbour and ride easily to home.

I will be supported by a GPS (with cigar lighter recharger cord, there is no on the bike :), a mobile, a waterproof jacket, spare clothes. I will bring my camera to take photos and a big pack fortune!!!! For all other demands I have an EFTPOS card! ;D
